Grocery chain using AI to spot shoplifters after major spike in thefts

The Co-operative says their costs related to shoplifting have gone up by nearly a fifth in the first half of the year, reaching a massive £39.5million.
Rising prices thanks to the cost of living crisis has led to a boom in theft from shops – so now the Co-op are fighting back.
They’re part of Project Pegasus, an AI project where CCTV is shared with retailers and police to try and identify serial thieves.
It comes as exclusive figures show up to 5.5million Brits have no savings as we head into winter.
The research suggests around 13% of adults have no rainy day fund at all – meaning there are a lot of people out there who would struggle financially if there was a household emergency or other issue.
